National Trails Day 2011
National Trails Day 2011 - Benjamin Property
Finishing what we started!
Mother Nature once again gave us a beautiful day for NTD this year. On June 4th , 54 volunteers converged at the Boulder County Courthouse parking lot. Fueled by breakfast sponsored by Boulder County, volunteers were divided up into crews and shuttled up to the trailhead off of Fourmile Canyon.
Chris Trujillo, BCPOS trail guru flagged out the alignment of a trail that volunteers were going to create by hand with picks and McLeods, Polaskis and rock bars. As with the rest of the trail, the tread was cut at 3’ instead of the usual 2’ we are used to for singletrack. The reason for this is that there are some very steep slopes that would be dangerous for people to pass on without sliding down and causing erosion.
243 volunteer hours late we had completed over 1,000 linear feet. Returning to the Betasso picnic area, volunteers were rewarded with Trail Ale provided by Oskar Blues Brewery, pasta provided by Noodles at Basemar, salad, bread and rice krispie treats provided by BMA, and way-cool shirts provided by the Oddfellows Lodge in Boulder, Boulder Business Products and the Fix bike shop.
Though the Benjamin loop is officially opened, the connector to Fourmile is not complete, but thanks to the volunteer efforts of BMA and BCPOS volunteers that included trail runners, equestrians and hikers, we are ~1,000 feet closer to being done.
BMA is happy to continue to build fun and sustainable trails with BCPOS!
