A group of BMA members braved thunderstorms and mud and armored a section of the Ponderosa Loop Trail at Boulder County's Heil Ranch on June 16. Led by the County's trail expert Mike Rutter, BMA'ers hauled big rocks to the trail, scooped totally saturated clay out of the trail tread, and pieced together a puzzle. The rocks had to be big enough to withstand horses. They needed to interlock to stay stable when hiked and ridden upon. The water never stopped. The water table was only about six inches below the surface, so it trickled into the trail during the work.

Trail Work
Our Tuesday evening BMA trailwork on April 30 attracted a strong turnout of enthusiastic volunteers and showed off the advanced design skills of (BCPOS) Boulder County Parks and Open Space's trail crew, led by Mike Rutter and Scott Winget. Walking up from the highway I was quickly impressed with the radical, positive change in the Betasso Connector. What had been a rocky, eroding, un-fun route one just had to endure, is now a sustainable singletrack that swings from side to side, shedding water at frequent dips with French-drains.

We want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to RockyMounts on April 24!  The beer was flowing and the smiles were contagious. In this installment of RockyMounts' legendary Guest Bartender series, Chad Melis and Christina Begy of REEB Cycles served up the Oskar Blues brews and raised $317 for BMA and better trails for Boulder County. Thanks Chad, Christina, and RockyMounts for your continued support!

Thanks for joining us at the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance's Spring Soiree! This annual springtime bash was a great success, due in no small part to your support. Thanks for coming out! We had a blast and are jazzed for another riding season, trail building season, and getting more and better trails on the ground in Boulder County.

On November 14th, Boulder County's Parks and Open Space Department held an open house to present some draft management plans for the Walker Ranch area.  "Management proposal" = how to care for the land, where trails go, as well as who gets to use what trails.  BMA asked mountain bikers to turn out to show there support for sustainable trails at Walker Ranch which are accessible to mountain bikes as well as other users.  As you can see in the below photo, the room was packed to the gills. You can probably count a bunch of people with helmet hair in there, because we showed up in force!

Pedaling foodies convened at the Sports Garage on Sunday, November 3rd for the inaugural Crocktoberfest. Those that arrived with a meat, veggie or "sugah" concoction plugged in their crockpot at one of the designated spots, grabbed a Twisted Pine beer, and began dishing out their goods.

Every October, BMA holds a big party to celebrate our membership and another awesome season of riding the great trails of Boulder County.  Not so coincidentally, BMA's bylaws require us to have a meeting of the membership each October, where we elect a new slate of candidates to 2-year terms on the Board of Directors  - how's that for taking a potentially boring duty and turning it into a reason to party?

What an incredible experience.  Eleven of BMA's MVVs (Most Valuable Volunteers) made the trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico to attend the IMBA World Summit from October 8 - 13. IMBA has posted notes from many of the sessions. Want to see a snapshot of what we saw? Check out the notes in the right-hand collumn here: Here's some thoughts from the attendees:

On April 5, 2012, the USFS hosted an Open House in Nederland to discuss the recreation plan for the West Magnolia area following the fuels reduction. The turnout was high and the folks that came had some very thoughtful questions and expressed their concerns about the cut and the follow-up very succinctly. Though a number of folks had questions about the why and how much of the tree cutting, the USFS representative, Ed Perault, did not make too many comments on that as the point of the meeting was "what happens next".

National Trails Day 2011 - Benjamin Property Finishing what we started! Mother Nature once again gave us a beautiful day for NTD this year. On June 4th , 54 volunteers converged at the Boulder County Courthouse parking lot. Fueled by breakfast sponsored by Boulder County, volunteers were divided up into crews and shuttled up to the trailhead off of Fourmile Canyon.
