Wapiti Spring 2012 Trail Work

Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS) is partnering with Boulder Mountainbike Alliance and other partner groups to perform several days of trail work at Heil Valley Ranch this spring.  There are several small BMA-sponsored projects as well as two public work project days on Saturday, April 14 and Saturday, May 5. - see below for a list of workdays.

The majority of the work will focus on improvements to the Wapiti Trail. Heil and the Wapiti Trail have seen an increase of use during the shoulder seasons - spring and fall/winter - when it is harder for the area's highly erodible soils to withstand constant wear and tear.  These trail projects will tackle two goals at once: to increase the sustainability of the trail system, and to make it easier for many people and different user groups to enjoy the trail at the same time.

This will be accomplished by narrowing the trail corridor, eliminating steep grades where appropriate to limit natural and user-caused erosion, designing more water diversions into the trail layout, adding rock armoring to the trail tread in the chronically wet/muddy areas, and opening up sight lines to allow trail users to recognize and prepare for encounters with other users.
